Setting Up Microsoft MFA

Prerequisites to solving issue / things to check for:

  • If you or the client you are assisting have an iOS device, please make sure we you/they know the Apple ID credentials
  • Make sure the user is preferably on Wi-Fi for the download of this application


How to setup:

  • On a computer, open up a web browser and navigate to www.office.com to begin the setup process
  • Click on the Sign in button on your webpage
  • Enter your account email address and click 'Next'
  • Click 'Next'
  • Following the on-screen instructions, install the Microsoft Authenticator application on your mobile device
  • If on an iOS device, go to the App Store
  • If on an Android device, go to the Google Play Store
  • In the app store, search for Microsoft Authenticator and click 'Install' or 'Get'
  • Once the app is finishing installing on your mobile device, go back to your computer's web browser and click 'Next'
  • Follow the steps to setup your account, allowing notifications on your phone when prompted, then click 'Next'
  • At this point, on your mobile device, you have allowed notifications for Microsoft Authenticator and then found and selected to add a Work or School account, now do NOT select the option that says 'Sign In', please select 'Scan QR Code'
  • Allow the application to access your camera, then scan the QR code that is displayed on your computer's web browser
  • After scanning the QR code, you will see your account email pop up at the top of your mobile device's screen, now we click 'Next'
  • The Microsoft Authenticator app will then push a notification to your mobile device, asking you to approve the sign-in, so hit 'Approve'
  • The Microsoft Authenticator is now setup
